According to the Director of ICE, employers should prepare for a huge increase in worksite raids and enforcement actions in the future.  U.S. businesses that employ foreign workers should make sure their paperwork and processes are in order, including I-9s, H-1B public access files, and all immigration-related paperwork. Trump Administration Exaggerated Immigrant Threats to Justify Raids by Timothy Bakken

It recently came to light that during a February immigration raid, the Department of Homeland Security did not only target those with serious criminal records or people who are otherwise threats to the U.S. Rather, then-DHS Secretary John Kelly worked hard to shape the narrative that would be told to the public to give the impression that only dangerous criminal immigrants were arrested when in fact the raid swept up mainly immigrants with no criminal records whatsoever. This example is only one of many similar raids during 2017, but it shows that the Trump administration is falsely labelling all undocumented immigrants as threats.

Frightening Result of Immigration Crackdowns by Timothy Bakken

LAPD_Mission_Hills.jpg

Due to Trump's harsh stance on immigration, undocumented immigrants who are victims of domestic and sexual abuse are afraid to come forward because they fear they or their relatives will be deported if they report the crime. In fact, since Trump has taken office, the amount of domestic and sexual abuse reports in latino neighborhoods has decreased substantially, and these crimes are already under-reported. This is a clear human right violation, and people should not have to live with abuse for fear of deportation, the two should be completely unrelated. The United States needs to make it clear that those who are being abused should not be afraid to come forward. Read the full article here

Trump Slashes Refugee Admissions by Timothy Bakken

In another unnecessarily harsh move, Trump has ordered refugee admissions for 2018 to be limited to 45,000.  President Obama had raised the annual limit to 110,000 for 2017 so this move represents a dramatic decrease.  In more than four decades, the annual limit on refugee admissions had never gone below 67,000.  While the immigration debate often centers on how immigrants to the U.S. improve our economy and further the important national interest of family unity, it is also important to remember that our big-hearted country has historically been a safe haven for people who are persecuted in their home countries.
